What do you know about Face Toners/Tonics?

What do you know about Face Toners/Tonics?
Face toners

(aka tonics) are an amazing addition to your skin care regimen, especially in the summer! We love them here at Tierra Mia Organics, and we wanted to share with you exactly why. Let's start with the basics, like what are face toners used for? They're helpful when it comes to closing the pores to seal in moisture after cleansing the face. That way all that hydrating goodness you just used on your face with one of our face soap bars can be locked in for the day!

As with every skin care product, it's always important to know what you're putting on your skin to ensure you're using only the best ingredients.

Both toners and tonics promise to help with acne, with drying out oily skin, or with bringing one's pH back in balance, but it's important to note that's not always the case. Unfortunately, many skin care lines will add alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy acids to toners with the promise that these will help with acne, oily, and aging skin, but in such low quantities these toners only end up drying out the skin. They can't do the job of sealing in moisture, which means we need to be more diligent when choosing our toners and tonics.
Beware of toners or tonics that contain these ingredients:
- alcohol
- glycolic acid
- salycilic acid
- retinols
These ingredients will not tone the face but dry it out and cause it to be sun sensitive. As you can imagine, this isn't ideal, especially not in the hot summer months. So, how do you know which face tonics or toners are good? Look for the ones made with hydrosols and distillates that are infused with herbs such as chamomile, lavender, or some tea extracts. Keep an eye out for tonics containing glycerin—it's a wonderful ingredient in a tonic that can be super effective for helping with dry skin.

Now that you know what a tonic is and what ingredients to look out for, it's important to know the best way to use them:
- Mist tonic onto your clean face just after towel drying
- Gently press down to ensure the mist is absorbed into your skin
- Repeat
- After a couple of minutes, apply a healthy and gentle moisturizer to the face, and voilà, you've sealed in moisture with even more moisture
If you haven't used a face tonic or toner, why not try one out? Better yet, try it out, and let us know how you like it! We always love to get feedback, and we think you'll love using our face tonic this summer.
